Photographer Anand Varma and National Geographic had to take their time with this project. In fact, they took six months of their time to make this amazing video. In this timelapse, Varma was able to record the birth of worker bees inside the hive. The video takes the viewer from the first few moments when the larvae are fighting to hatch, all the way to where the viewer is able to see fully formed worker bees flying on their own for the first time. The beehive itself was built specifically for this project. Bee populations are facing a steep, worldwide decline, mostly due to Colony Collapse Disorder. In the U.S. alone, the honey bee population has declined 25 percent since 1990. A critical element in the life cycle of many plants, bees are much more than just a summer nuisance, and Varma has managed to capture them at the start of a very important life.
