The first X-Games was held in 1995 as a competitive outlet for the then-increasingly-popular extreme sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding, rollerblading, BMX, etc. The event has since become hugely popular, drawing a very consistent fan base and top-tier sponsorship money.

In 1997, Winter X-Games were added, and in 1998, the event was expanded internationally. The games have always been a venue for some big performances, including several firsts like Tony Hawk's famous 900 on the skateboard. The X-Games also helped propel Shaun White to worldwide fame.
