They say that if you do what you love, you'll never have to work a day in your life. It's a simple enough saying, but one that doesn't get enough credit in my opinion. Just in case you aren't familiar with this turn of phrase, it just means that if you're fortunate enough to have made a career out of something you're passionate about, then going to work every day becomes a pleasure. Sadly, the majority of people out there are working at whatever job will pay the bills without any sense of enjoyment or fulfilment.
If you can't make a living out of what you love, you should still indulge in it anyway. Doing things you enjoy is psychologically rewarding, especially if it's something that you can also challenge yourself with a little bit. Just ask Yvonne Dowlen - the spritely 87-year-old moves around like a woman half her age. She credits her good health and mobility to her love of ice skating, which she practices five days a week. She's even used it to help reverse the effects of sciatica and other age-related ailments!
Dowlen says she started skating back during the Great Depression, a time when simply owning a pair of ice skates was a pretty big deal. She's spent a lifetime on the ice, and even worked as a performer with the Ice Capades in her younger days, traveling the world and bringing joy to crowds everywhere. She's still going strong today, competing in senior citizens ice skating competitions where she's usually the eldest one there - and the most lively!
