On a hot, sunny morning in northwestern Indiana, nine-year-old Elysia was playing near a creek in her backyard when she made a shocking discovery. With temperatures nearing 90° Fahrenheit, she spotted a pair of "pink legs kicking away" in the grass.
Initially, she thought it was a doll or some other toy, but then she realized what it really was ... a newborn baby girl whose skin was burning in the hot summer sun. The placenta and umbilical cord were also lying in the grass, infested with maggots. After Elysia alerted her mother, Heidi, to the situation, they called 911 and brought the baby inside.
