The exact origin of the harp is unknown; the instrument has been found in Sumerian burial pits from 3500 BCE and depicted in paintings found on the walls of Egyptian tombs dating back to 3000 BCE.
Although the shape has been tweaked over the ensuing centuries, it has remained a popular instrument, well-known for the ethereal sounds it produces. And ethereal is exactly the word that comes to mind when it's played by the young harpist in this video, Alisa Sadikova.
The prodigy started playing at the age of five and now trains at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory. Despite her young age, she is world-renowned; she has performed at Carnegie Hall and is regularly the youngest harpist to grace the stage at international conferences.
