A Behind-The-Scenes Look At How Prosthetic Eyes Are Made

The work done by the people at Moorfields Eye Hospital goes beyond medical care. Since the founding of the hospital in 1805, they have been at the forefront of the field of opthalmology.

With soldier after soldier returning from the Napoleonic wars with eye injuries, John Cunningham Saunders founded the first hospital devoted to the treatment of eyes, in London. It soon moved to a building in Lower Moorfields, the source of its present-day name. It received its Royal Charter in 1837, but the name Moorfields stuck. An innovator in ophthalmology since the beginning, Moorfield's opened the world's largest children's eye center in 2007, as well as an overseas branch in Dubai.
