A Man With Alzheimer's Drew Several Self-Portraits Over 5 Years. The Last One Is Heartbreaking

William Utermohlen was a successful American artist living in London. In 1995, at the age of 61, he received a devastating diagnosis. He had Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative disorder with no known cure.

Following his diagnosis, Utermohlen began painting self portraits. He kept up the series throughout the disease's progression, right up until he was admitted into a nursing home in 2000. His paintings show a heart-wrenching portrayal of what it is like to live with Alzheimer's.
