A New Kind Of Safety App

9-1-1. Those three numbers have stood as a symbol of safety in the face of emergency for nearly 50 years. It's the first telephone number that everyone memorizes, mostly because it isn't a choice. We're taught from an early age that if anything is wrong we are to call that number. It doesn't matter if it's a car accident, a house fire, or a mugger, 9-1-1 will help you whenever and wherever.

But how well does 9-1-1 really work? Obviously, first responders do their very best to be there at a moment's notice ... but they're only human. After all, the average response time for a 9-1-1 call is 10 to 20 minutes, which is more than enough time for a criminal to commit a crime and escape without ever being caught. Surely it's time to update the system, right?

The first 9-1-1 call was made in 1968 - a time when telephones were the peak of communication technology. Now that we're in the 21st century, communication has evolved to the point where it's almost unrecognizable. Sure, we still talk on the phone, but we also Snapchat, Skype, and Tweet to our heart's content. If we can use that technology to keep in touch with random friends from high school, there's no reason why we can't use it to make the world a safer place. That's where "On Camera" comes in. This new app is still in beta testing, so it might be a little while before it is supported in your area, but its commercial really took us by surprise. If you'd like to learn more about this app, check out their website's comprehensive FAQ. They may not be able to prevent all crime, but even eliminating a small percentage would be worth the effort.
