An auditory brain stem implant completely bypassing the ear and going straight to the brain, still in a trial period and not yet approved by the FDA, was Maggie's first chance at being able to hear. As the first teen to receive the surgery for this new technology, Maggie was able to hear her parents speak for the first time in her life.
Over 5% of the world's population has disabling hearing loss, according to the World Health Organization. That is approximately 360 million people across the globe. 14-year-old Maggie Gleason is one of those affected by profound hearing loss.
