A Social Experiment Of Giving And Taking What You Need

That feeling we experience when giving is something we know and understand, but there is also hard science behind the idea that giving is good for your mind, body and soul. In 2006, researchers at the National Institutes of Health gave subjects money and asked what charity they would like to support. MRIs indicated that even just the thought of donation activated the part of the brain associated with pleasure, reward and dopamine-induced euphoria.
When they put up this board in Los Angeles' Union Station, they weren't sure what would happen. Many would think leaving cash in a public place would cause a free-for-all. But, it's pretty clear that, while some people did take what they needed, many would rather give.
