Down syndrome, caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, is one of the most commonly occurring chromosomal conditions. In fact, one in every 691 babies in the United States are born with the condition, totaling over 400,000 people throughout the country. As common as Down syndrome is, society needs to be more accepting.
Since the story broke, Garcia has received positive support, as well as formal accolades. After hearing of Garcia's good deed, the people at the National Down Syndrome Society presented him with their Community Change-Maker Award.
It's hard to believe that in this day and age hateful attitudes like this exist. Unfortunately, discrimination has not yet been eradicated.
