When Barkley arrived at the Daviess County Animal Shelter in Kentucky, rescuers knew it wouldn't be an easy recovery. They'd found him in a trailer park, alone and in desperate need of medical attention. His teeth and gums were in horrible condition, and his paws were infected from spending too many nights outside. Ashley Clark, the director of the animal shelter, was able to identify his most pressing needs and begin treatment right away. The one thing that proved tougher to treat, however, was Barkley's depression.
Overwhelmed by the new environment and still shaken by his previous living situation, Barkley spent entire days facing the wall. He wasn't eating and refused to let his rescuers put a leash on him. Thankfully, the kind hearts at the Daviess County Animal Shelter didn't give up on Barkley. While doggie depression might seem difficult to treat, there are a number of signs to keep an eye out for when dealing with a pup that doesn't seem like him or herself. After all, our dogs are strong communicators, but we can only help them if we listen to what they have to say.
It took a lot of time and patience, but, after two weeks, Barkley was a changed pup. His story just goes to show that no matter how dark things get for our furry friends, it's never too late to give them the love and care that they deserve.
