All Safyre Wanted For Christmas Was Cards And The Internet Answered Her Call

Dec 15, 2015 By John-Michael Bond

The holidays are a time to reflect on life, take account of what you’re grateful for, and celebrate the people around us. This year the story of a young girl named Safyre Terry took quickly spread around the world, creating an opportunity to show one special little girl how wonderful people can be sometimes.

This is Safyre. In 2013, she suffered burns over 75 percent of her body and lost her family in an unsolved arson fire. She now lives with her aunt in Schenectady, NY, and like every other little kid loves Christmas.

This year her aunt brought home a Christmas card tree to hold the holiday cards they got this year. Safyre was ecstatic, and couldn’t wait to fill the tree with cards. Her aunt said it might not happen because they only get a few cards every year, but she had an idea.

Safyre’s aunt put a message up on Facebook asking for help making the little girl’s Christmas wish come true. She asked that people send a few extra cards to the family this year. The internet had bigger plans. In a post on Facebook Safyre’s aunt updated the world on how things have gone. The results were incredible.

I really think I am dehydrated from crying so much... This is absolutely amazing, it takes my breath away. We, my family and I have been through so much darkness of this this world. Then to see the most powerful BEAUTY of the world. The world coming together to make Safyre's wish come true is unfathomable. All along we knew God saved her for a reason, never in ours wild dreams, did we think she would move the hearts of many worldwide. Safyre is a living testimony, "no matter what, you can get through anything" as long as you BELIEVE in HOPE FAITH LOVE. Thank you doesn't quite say enough for the graditude we have for all you caring and generosity. THANK YOU

More than 8,000 people collectively donated over $300,000 to the family through a YouCaring campaign, but that pales in comparison to the number of Christmas cards the family received. How many cards?

18,000 and counting. Enough that they took up a whole garage, with more still on the way.

Sorting all these cards was a big task. Thankfully they had a lot of help from friends, family, bikers, and their community.

Here’s Safyre helping with all the sorting.

The cards came in from all over the world. Safyre even made a new friend in Hong Kong who sent her a special gift.
