Dating back to 14,000 BCE, clay has been a mainstay of mankind’s building materials. There are thousands of different varieties of clay in existence varying by the mineral content, region or origin and the time period in history. In fact, some of the most expensive pottery in the world is highly valued because of a combination of historical significance, the process used in its creation, mineral content and the region from where it originated.
Because of its unique properties, clay is used for both utilitarian and decorative purposes. We commonly see them being used for pots and decorations, but forget that it is also used in construction. The process of using clay can be somewhat painstaking, but with the right amount of skill, the results can be spectacular.
