Computer-controlled movement in applications like robotics and CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) is typically called "motion control." The technology has completely revolutionized industrial production and design. For the past 25 years, Bruce Shapiro has been dedicated to exploring motion control and its opportunities as an artistic medium. It combines his loves of art, science and education into a single concept when he builds kinetic sculptures and CNC art tools. It doesn't hurt that his creations are as mesmerizing as they are beautiful.
His Sisyphus Machine is a kinetic drawing machine that relies on magnets that drag marbles through sand to create exquisitely detailed patterns. On his website, though, he is quick to note that this machine is the result of years of failures. By the same token, these gorgeous sand images are not the only success he has found when working with motion control. Currently, he is working on tabletop versions of this art that can be purchased and installed in homes. Check out his work below and see the amazing Sisyphus in action.
