Colorful, large plumage is often a defining characteristic for peacocks. However, not all peacocks fit into that stereotype; this gorgeous bird, for instance, is snow white, although the lack of color doesn't make the animal any less impressive.
Although they are often referred to as albino, most white peacocks are actually not; instead, they are usually just part of a subspecies of Indian blue peacocks created by genetic mutation. They are still viewed as rather special, though, and used as symbols. In many instances of Christian artwork, a white peacock has been used to represent Jesus. Buddhism and other vedic religions have also attached special meaning to the snowy birds, sometimes using them as a symbol for nirvana.
