When Plattsburg, Missouri Police Officer Nick Shepherd responded to a call from a homeowner about an unknown animal, he had no idea what to expect. Thankfully, a tiny camera attached to Officer Shepherd's handheld radio recorded his rescue of a large brown dog stuck on the homeowner's fence. Adorably, the dog rushes off and immediately jumps into Officer Shepherd's squad car. But why? It could be that the dog recognized its rescuer's scent coming from the car. An average dog's sense of smell is tens of thousands of times more sensitive than that of a human. A researcher at Florida State University puts it this way, "if you make the analogy to vision, what we can see at 1/3 of a mile, a dog could see more than 3,000 miles away".
