Dad Builds A 3-Seated Chair To Read Bedtime Stories To His Kids

Everyone knows the importance of spending quality time with children when they're young, especially when that quality time involves activities that foster their senses of creativity and imagination. That is why, despite the waves of technology that have taken over most parts of day-to-day life, reading bedtime stories to the little ones is an act that hopefully won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

Story time can be a bit of a struggle, though, if you have more children than can fit on your lap. This was a challenge faced by Hal Russell Taylor, a dad who realized that he just didn't have the lap room to give his three children the close attention that he wanted. Instead of cutting out the lap bit, he got creative and built something that is beyond sweet: a three-seated rocking chair.

When Hal's third child, Rose, was born, he realized that he wouldn't be able to fit her on his lap during story time. He explained on Facebook, "I did not have a lap large enough for three children [so] I had to come up with something."

Here's his son, Thad, helping Dad out with the chair. He's got his safety goggles on and he's ready to go.

And here's Rose, the baby who started it all. She's also ready to help, with a little piece of sandpaper, but it might be a bit early for that.

The wonderful creation is called "The Story Time Rocking Chair."

Here is Hal with his three beautiful children, taking the chair for a spin. It actually won first place in the Fredericksburg Art Show in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

What an amazingly sweet creation. The perfect place for a father to bond with his children.

Hal has been making these chairs since 1992, and he sells them on his website. He has shipped them to various places around the world in order to spread his solution to the lap-space problem. He uses 262 pieces of wood to make just one chair, and that seems to be a pretty accurate reflection of the type of care and love that he puts into both his work and his family. If you love this idea and want a Story Time Rocking Chair all for your own, you can order one here.
