Deaf 15-Year-Old Learns How To Communicate For The First Time

Dec 27, 2014
Patrick Otema was born in northern Uganda, an area ravaged by war. Even though education has become compulsory in Uganda, there are often far too many students and far too few teachers. In Uganda and developing countries like it, the number of deaf students is more than twice the number of deaf students in the UK. Many of these children and adults become deaf due to illnesses like malaria, measles and meningitis.

23-year-old teacher Raymond Okkelo learned sign language six months prior to teaching the class. Everyone has the desire to be heard and to communicate and interact with the world around them. Director Daniel Bogado and reporter Kiki King created a documentary about Patrick to draw attention to his amazing change.
