With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, you will see flowers everywhere you look. It’s convenient for the forgetful boyfriend who needs a last minute gift, but it’s inconvenient for those of us who want to save money on decorations. Businesses have been known to hike up the prices of flowers for high demand holidays, and there is no holiday that brings in a higher demand than Valentine’s Day. So what are you to do if you want some flowers for the weekend without being charged an arm and a leg for them?
Well, we have the perfect solution for you. These flower bouquets have a lot more going on than meets the eye. With just a few simple items, you can make your very own quirky flower display that is guaranteed to turn more heads than anything you will buy at the grocery store. All you need for these DIY flowers are paper towels, a doily, a coffee filter and a pair of scissors. Then, once you’re done, you can show them off to everyone.
Paper Towel Hydrangeas
All you will need for this nifty project is a pair of scissors, a paper towel and floral wire. Try to use a thicker paper towel so that it won’t rip. Start by placing five paper towels on top of each other and then cut in waves along all four edges. Then pinch the middle together as seen below. Use floral wire around the middle to keep this shape.
Next, fluff out both ends of the paper towel to give it a flowery look. Use the scissors to cut the paper towel down the middle.
Now you can arrange the “flowers” to your desire and you’ve got a beautiful centerpiece. For an added effect, glue fake leaves to give your bouquet a realistic look.
For this artsy project, you will need a red doily, green tape and a pair of scissors. Start by cutting directly in the middle of the doily and then roll it up as directed below.
Twist together pieces of green tape and stick them on the bottom to make a stem. If you want to get fancy, place your roses in a gift box to make a perfect Valentine’s Day decoration.
Coffee Filter Flowers
With just an ordinary coffee filter and a pair of scissors, you can make your very own fully bloomed flower piece. First, cut flower petal shapes into the filter. You might want to trace a line beforehand to make sure you end up with a good result. Do this a few times.
Use a skewer to wrap your petals around until you have a full flower. Put tape along the bottom base to keep everything in place. You can then use green tape to cover the skewer which will make a long stem.
For some extra pizzaz, you can try these homemade flowers made with felt. Cut a wave pattern into the felt and then use a needle to pull thread as seen below. Pull lightly on the thread to create a flower pattern and then tie off the knot.
For an extra element, use hot glue to place a button in the center of your flower. How cute are these?
