Sergeant Chris Duke didn't expect anything in return when he befriended three stray dogs while serving in Afghanistan. Sasha, Rufus and Target, as he called them, were taken in by Duke and the other soldiers living in his barracks. Duke explains that, "a lot of us used the three of 'em as a kind of escape, ya know, whenever you're homesick." Little did he know that these three dogs would provide them with a lot more than just the comforts of home.
This isn't the first time in history that animals have stepped up and responded to the call of duty. Have you ever heard of Wojtek, the brown bear who served as a Corporal in the Polish army during World War II?
Wojtek famously fought in the Battle of Monte Cassino, where he transported crates of ammunition to soldiers. While they may not have achieved as high a ranking as Wojtek, these three dogs are shining examples of how animals are willing to do whatever it takes to protect those who care for them.
