No dog owner wants to make the decision to put their dog down, but certain circumstances make the heartbreaking choice unavoidable. Jamie Stumpf's dog, Maximus, was "the dog" as she described him. Named after Russel Crowe's character in the film Gladiator, Max was strong, stoic, and brave. These qualities are what made Jamie and her family love Max so much, but they are also what made letting him go that much harder.
Their story begins at a summer barbecue. Jamie, Max, and the rest of the gang had enjoyed an evening of delicious food and playing in the pool. Max had been enjoying his brand new "Kong" toy, a red ball with a small opening on one side. At one point in the evening, Jamie's son pointed out that the ball seemed like it was stuck in Max's mouth, but, when everything appeared to be fine, they shrugged it off and continued playing. It wasn't until Max woke Jamie up in the middle of the night that the red flags started going up.
Max's ball had gotten stuck around his tongue, and was causing it to swell to the point that removing it would be impossible. By the time they were able to make it to the vet, they faced a difficult decision. Today, Jamie, and others like her, are trying their best to get the word out and stop other dogs from experiencing the same tragedy.
