Everyone needs a best friend. Whether it's a spouse, a sibling or an old classmate, we all need someone to constantly be by our side and share life with. For 62-year-old Mitani Hisao, his best friend is none other than his pet giant tortoise. Hisao lives in Tokyo, Japan and he found his friend 19 years ago as a baby in a small pet shop. In less than a few years, the tortoise grew to his full size of two and a half feet long, weighing over 150 pounds.

The tortoise, named Bon-Chan, is an African spurred tortoise. These animals are found living in desert climates in North Africa. According to biologists, these tortoises can live up to 150 years. That is good news for Hisao, who can expect to keep walking with his best friend for a very long time.
