Wheeled seats have been used for transporting disabled people since ninth century China BCE. It is believed that the first wheelchair was a retrofitted wheelbarrow used to move people and heavy objects around. This did not change for at least several centuries. In about 525 CE, images of wheeled chairs made specifically to carry people begin to occur in Chinese art. Europeans began using wheelchairs much later during the German Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries. Today, inventors are constantly improving the durability and usefulness of wheelchairs. A new life changing innovation was first shown to the world in this video from the 2011 Abilities Expo.
