From a young age, we're taught that happiness is good and sadness is bad. After all, Thomas Jefferson didn't write about "life, liberty, and the pursuit of sadness." So, what's the point of keeping it around? Shouldn't we just neglect our feelings of sadness in favor of more positive emotions? Joey van den Heuvel used to do just that, until he realized there was actually a lot of joy to be found in sadness.
