Foil Boarding Is The Coolest Sport You've Never Heard Of

Laird Hamilton, American big-wave surfer and pioneer for tow-in surfing, has taken advantage of some of the foil board's beneficial qualities and decided to build his own. Watch Hamilton while he takes his homemade foil board for a spin on some major waves in Raglan, New Zealand.
Foil boarding is a similar sport to surfing but, unlike a typical surfboard, a foil board has hydrofoil that extends below the water's surface. Mike Mack, a surfer and water-skier, made the first foil board in 1993, which was intended to tow behind a boat like a jet ski. The point of the foil on the bottom of the surfboard is to let the rider gain more height while he or she is riding.
