Napkins have been used for over 600 years, although they were reserved primarily for royalty until the 1800s. With the prosperity brought about during the Industrial Revolution, fancy gatherings became more common and napkin folding became a way to set your party apart. After a decline in popularity during wartime, there was a revival after the 1950s. Today, fanciful folds are usually discarded in favor of more minimalist ones.
