Here's Why This Quarter May Be Worth Upwards Of $30,000

A rare quarter was recently listed on eBay for $35,000. The listing ended on June 15, and was apparently sold. The reason for this incredible valuation? Seller Mike Byers, an expert on rare coin and proofing/minting errors, says it's due to a very rare proofing error.

"Proof coins are struck by technicians who had feed the blanks into special presses," he explains on the listing. "They are produced, examined and packaged using extreme quality control. It is very unusual to find major proof errors."

This particular coin was described as follows: "This unique 1970-S Proof Quarter from the United States was over struck on a 1941 Quarter from Canada. This mint error was originally discovered in [a] group of San Francisco Proof Errors that was auctioned by the State of California... This is one of the most fascinating and intriguing proof mint errors ever discovered."

According to Collector's Weekly, American coin collectors come in two main varieties. There are those who collect rare coins, focusing primarily on the impeccable condition of the coin, while others collect coins with errors on them, who actually look for misprints and signs of damage.

This particular quarter from 1970 was printed on reused Canadian coins from 1941. In some cases, the "1941" is just barely visible above the word "dollar" on the back of the coin. Unfortunately, according to Woman's World magazine, it's "unlikely that one of these high-value quarters will be in your junk drawer." Still, you never know!
