High School Quarterback Keeps An Elementary School Promise To Take Friend With Down Syndrome To The Prom

May 18, 2015

In second grade, Ben Moser and Mary Lapkowicz became the best of friends. In fact, they were in the same elementary school class three years in a row. Mary has Down syndrome, but Ben never allowed that to impact their friendship. He always made sure that Mary was included and having fun in any activity. Their teacher, Trace Spogli, shared with PennLive.com that "If [Mary] was looking like she wasn't having fun, he would go over and talk to her… He just always watched over her.”

Near the end of the fourth grade year, Ben attended his cousin's prom walk with his family. After seeing what prom was all about, he returned to school and promised his sweet friend that someday, he would be her date. Eventually, Mary's family moved into the Central Dauphin school district, where her father, Tom Lapkowicz, was a math teacher and also worked with the high school football team. Ben, on the other hand, continued on to Susquehanna High School, where he plays football as their quarterback. When the two rival high schools played each other this fall, Ben and Mary reunited on the sidelines. Mary helps as the team's equipment manager. Ben recalled his promise and eventually surprised her with a promposal. Last week, he escorted Mary to her prom at Central Dauphin High School and their fourth grade teacher even came to see them during the family's picture time.

Lisa Moser shared that she has always encouraged her children to "put others first, love from their heart and stand up for what they believe in.” She is amazed by the hoopla that this prom date has created and shares that Ben could care less about the media. His only hope is that somehow Mary's favorite musician, Nick Jonas, might see this on social media and contact her.
