Astrophotographer and IEEE Spectrum senior editor David Schneider walks through how to build an exoplanet-hunting device using a budget digital single-lens reflex camera, some scrap wood and an inexpensive programmable microprocessor. Schneider says that the basic idea is to use a technique known as "transit detection", in which you look for stars that temporarily become less bright as their planet passes in between us and the star.
