Incredible Rescue Of A Puppy From A Sewer Hole

Most people go through their days without ever having to be lowered down into a sewer; that's not always the case, though, for the incredible staff and volunteers at Animal Aid Unlimited. The organization is committed to changing the lives of the animals that live in Udaipur, India, where there is a huge population of stray and neglected animals. They help any animal in need, too, not just dogs. Donkeys, cows, pigs, fish, and mice have all been helped by the dedicated volunteers.

When a resident of Udaipur sees an animal in need, they know who to call. The Animal Aid Unlimited "emergency rescue team responds to calls on [their] helpline reporting sick or wounded animals in need of help throughout the day, every day. [They are] the lifeline for thousands of animals who otherwise wouldn't stand a chance." With their around-the-clock efforts, they have rescued more than 50,000 animals since they began their work in 2002!

The idea for Animal Aid Unlimited came to the founders gradually. Erika, Jim, and Claire Abrams-Meyers first moved to Udaipur from Seattle in the early 1990s. They immediately noticed the prevalence of injured and neglected street animals. They didn't know what to do since there was no facility to rehabilitate and care for street animals in the region at the time. Finally, they decided to fix the problem themselves and Animal Aid Unlimited was born. They started with one vet, four staff members, and no telephone. Over the last decade, they've grown exponentially; their facilities now occupy four acres and employ 50 full-time staff members and volunteers.
