While it might not be the most impressive bed we've ever seen here at Wimp, this bed seems a little more practical (and a whole lot easier to build). Storage beds might not be a new idea, but that doesn't make this one any less exciting. Combine that with the fact that just about any amateur DIYer could pull it off and you've got a real winner of a home improvement project.
And you don't have to stop at this bed either. Taking existing products from IKEA and turning them into something else altogether is hardly a new idea; in fact, there's a whole website devoted to IKEA hacks. In just 2015 alone, over 600 new hacks and ideas revolving around the repurposing of IKEA furniture were published on IKEA Hackers. Currently, voting is ongoing for the best idea and the best hack submitted to the website in 2015 and, let us tell you, there are some doozies. This SEKTION platform bed even made the list!
If bed hacks are your thing, one mom came up with a clever solution for the sleeping arrangements for her two sons and any potential overnight guests, as well as added storage. Using four one-by-four KALLAX shelving units, she formed the outside perimeter of an oversized bed. For interior support, she used three more units, although plywood is a less expensive alternative. Three twin mattresses placed side-by-side offer ample sleeping space. A cheap IKEA table top fits squarely in the middle, flush against the wall, useful as a bedside table and creating two separate sleeping spaces. It's also easily removed when the boys have sleepovers.
