Two Young Girls Aim For The Stars With Their "Loki Lego Launcher"
Kimberly and Rebecca Yeung are two young scientists who have already done some pretty incredible work. Using a homemade craft built from old arrow shafts and some plywood, they sent their cat, Loki, 14 miles into the Earth's stratosphere. Okay, they didn't actually launch their cherished pet into space. But a photo of Loki and a LEGO figure of R2-D2 made the journey, assisted by a weather balloon, and captured on two GoPro cameras.
These two girls weren't playing space cowboy, either. They worked out all the details, selecting a launch site that would prevent the spaceship from landing on anything or anyone, and attaching a special recording device to measure all sorts of flight data, like altitude, speed, temperature and more.
