It might not cut through metal, but this industrial braiding machine makes something that provides strength and support most people use every day. This video shows the making of a giant carbon fiber braid, but the machine is used for so much more.
The textile industry uses the machine's output for things like shoe laces, yarn, cords and candle wicks. If you've ever jumped out of plane, you've got this kind of machine to thank, too; ropes like those used for parachutes during skydiving are made using this technique. Fisherman also use nets, ropes and lines produced on these machines, sometimes using high-tech, ultra thin and strong fibers. Most importantly, lives have been saved by sutures and stents made from these braids.
