Step one is take off your pants. Step two is ... tie them around your neck? Sure, why not. This is apparently quite a well-known trick among saltier seadogs, but it’s news to us. If you find yourself in the unenviable position of being in open water without a floatation device, you can actually create one using the clothes you’re wearing. Swim lessons always help, but if you’re far from shore, eventually you’re going to tire from treading water, and that’s when disaster can happen. Not to mention, less movement means less chance of sharks mistaking you for injured prey. Your best bet is to wear a life jacket when out on open water, but if that’s not an option for some reason, it’s good to know there’s backup.
