Mom Posts Viral Message About Car Seat Safety

Accidents are never planned, and oftentimes can’t be prevented. But, that doesn’t mean that you can't be prepared.

Kylee Barrett recently had one of the most terrifying experiences a mother can have. She was in a car accident, with her two small children in the back seat. Though one of her children sustained minor injuries, they both survived what could've been certain death. Was it luck? "No," says Kylee. She attributes it to a properly installed child's car seat, adding, "To say our car seat did its job is such an understatement!"

While driving her five-year-old son, Kolton, to school one morning, with her two-year-old, Hunter, along for the ride, her car hit a patch of black ice and swerved off the road. A tree crushed the side of the car where Hunter was placed in his rear-facing car seat. While the toddler suffered a broken femur and some bruises and scrapes, Kylee knows that if it wasn’t for the precaution she took while installing his car seat, he would surely be dead.

Kylee immediately took to Facebook to share her story and spread the word.

She posted pictures of her car and Hunter's car seat to show how close she came to losing her two-year-old.

"Get your car seats checked by a CPST," says Kylee. "Use it properly. Every. Single. Time. The life of your child relies on it.”

Kylee points out that you don’t have to spend a lot of money for a safe car seat. “This specific seat retails for $100. It’s NOT a ‘nice’ seat,” she says. “But, it further illustrates the point that you don’t have to spend a fortune to keep your child safe.”

Kylee says she was only recently made aware of the importance of car seat safety. As she said on Facebook, "Thank you for all the techs out there and what you do, because I didn't know better months ago, and, because a tech told me I was doing it wrong, I have my son!"

She shared these photos to demonstrate the necessity of taking special care when inserting a child’s car seat. She hopes that showing the close-call she had with Hunter will influence other parents not to take their child’s car safety for granted.
