Gray whales are a baleen whale that can reach a weight of 36 tons. They received their name because of the gray patches and white mottling on their dark skin, and have a life span of 55 to 70 years.
Gray whales are known for making one of the longest mammalian migrations, which is, on average, a 10,000 to 14,000-mile round trip. Like all whales, gray whales surface to breathe, so spotting them from North America's west coast is a fairly common sight. In rare cases, they will purposefully and willingly come up to boats to interact with humans.
In this video, a gray whale surprises a boat with its appearance. However, when the passengers see what's happening beneath it, they can't believe their eyes.
