Barbie has seen her share of ups and downs in the press lately. The dolls have taken a hit for promoting gender stereotypes and unhealthy body image. On the flip side, they've also gained a lot of praise with some recent moves they have made, including having a more diverse array of dolls representing various ethnicities (their most recent release was a doll that looked like teen idol Zendaya, with gorgeous braided locks to match).
In this new commercial, Barbie is aiming to address critics who say that playing with the dolls can have a negative impact on a young girl's career aspirations. In it, hidden cameras capture five adorable young girls taking on various professions in real-life settings. One girl is a college neuroscience professor, another is a jet-setting businesswoman. Yet another girl is the new soccer coach to a group of amused (and slightly confused) adult men, yelling at them to kick their knees "up like a unicorn!" The ad is absolutely adorable, and shows Barbie's mission to return to play that leads to self-discovery. Here's hoping it takes hold.
