The cats were originally introduced to Aoshima as a means to get rid of the mice that infested fishermen's boats. From there, the cats continued to multiply until they completely ruled the island. Tourists continue to flock to Aoshima to witness the unbelievable amount of cats ruling over the island.
Japan is home to a number of strange yet intriguing attractions. Aoshima Island in the Ehime Prefecture definitely falls under this category. The island is one of many cat islands throughout Japan and is overtaken by a massive population of feral cats. Aoshima's population has six cats for every person.
