One Of History's Most Iconic Photos Was Accidentally Believed To Be Staged
Feb 26, 2015
The battle of Iwo Jima was a historically significant one, representing a serious loss in U.S. and Japanese casualties over several days of intense, bloody battles. Iwo Jima is a small island but had strategic importance as an early warning station for the Japanese. It was also a matter of honor not to lose the island since it would be the first home soil lost by the Japanese during the war.
On February 23, 1945 Iwo Jima was successfully captured by the U.S. Marines.
Joe Rosenthal's iconic photograph, "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima," is probably one of the most famous, most instantly recognizable photos ever taken. Though there was controversy over if this photo was staged, this video proves that that was simply a misunderstanding.
