Dogs are a lot like people when it comes to babyhood. They are an “altricial” species, meaning they are born requiring their mother for survival. Humans are also altricial, unlike most other primates. The suggested reason for this difference is that our brains grew so large that childbirth needed to happen while they were still small enough for it to work.
You can see the opposite in many farm animals, like pigs and horses, who are typically born able to walk and even run.
