The first nails painted were likely in China around 3000 BC. Over the many centuries that followed, royals painted their nails. During the Zhou dynasty era, around 600 BC, royals favored gold and silver nail polish. The earliest known recipes of the Chinese nail polishes were a mix of beeswax, egg whites, gelatin, vegetable dyes and Arabic gum. As of 2013, nail polish became a $768 million dollar industry in the United States alone. "Time" magazine called nail polish and nail care one of the health and beauty industry's fastest growing sectors, jumping 32% in just two years.
