Mexico's famed San Ignacio Lagoon is known worldwide as being one of the best places to go whale-spotting. Whales in this area have gotten so used to the presence of humans, that they will often come up to the tourist boats.
At San Ignacio, the boats are not allowed to actively approach the whales. Instead, they must wait patiently in one spot hoping that a whale will approach. The whales could easily avoid everyone, but given the frequency of this occurring, it seems the whales really enjoy interacting with humans!
In this spectacular video, a mother gray whale lifts up her calf to help her get a better view of the tourists on the boat. Whales, like any other animal, are extremely protective of their babies, so the fact that this lucky tour group got to interact with one so closely is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event.
