Special Needs Teen Brings A Very Special Date To Prom

May 15, 2016 By Mary Madsen

It's that time of the year again: prom season. Just as formal secondary education is winding down, with final exams and graduation on the horizon, there's one last chance for seniors to let their hair down. With many kids leaving their hometowns to go off to different colleges, jobs, and other opportunities, it just might be the last time everyone is in the same room together having a ball.

And with prom season comes the many traditions that make it such a special experience. There's the voting for King and Queen and the crowning ceremony. There's the excitement of shopping for the perfect dress and figuring out the best hairstyle and makeup. And, of course, there's the anticipation of asking, or waiting to be asked by, the perfect date.

And Oklahoma senior Paige Walls was certainly no different when it came to prom.

Shortly after birth, Paige began to suffer from seizures. Her parents, Mona and Charles, were desperate for answers, but they kept being dismissed by doctors.

Although all the other doctors who saw Paige told Mona she was just being overly anxious, one pediatrician knew it was something more. He refused to stop investigating until he could give the Walls an answer.

After observations and tests, Paige was diagnosed with CDKL5, a rare genetic condition that causes severe seizures and neuro-developmental impairment.

Paige's condition hasn't stopped her, though. In many ways, she's just like your average teenager. She attends school and is even part of this Hulbert High School's 2016 graduating class!

And just like any other high school senior, she wanted to attend prom and feel like absolute royalty while she's there. Determined to go to prom, Paige needed to find the necessities: a date and a dress.

Paige quickly found the dress of her dreams, a purple and black dress decked out with rhinestones and tulle.

The date was a bit harder; initially, Paige wanted her dad to escort her to prom. Unfortunately, he couldn't get the night off work.

Paige and her mother thought long and hard about who would make the best backup date. Finally, they found the perfect guy: Dr. James A. Lewis, Paige's beloved doctor. With that idea in mind, the two sat down together and penned an invitation.

Dr. Lewis isn't just any old doctor. He's actually the physician who the Walls credit with saving Paige's life because of his refusal to give up on her. He provided the family with the original diagnosis and has spent the last 18 years making sure that Paige receives the best care possible.

For the Walls, Dr. Lewis is more than just a doctor; he's a friend, adviser, and source of constant support. Even though he is not related by blood, Paige calls him Grandpa.

Just like Dr. Lewis was the knight in shining armor when Paige was only an infant, providing the family with an accurate diagnosis, he saved the day for Paige's prom!
