Abandoned classic structures provide a challenge for communities. Renovating them or tearing them down are both expensive propositions, leaving them to crumble while they wait for someone with deep pockets to come by and fix the problem. The church of Santa Barbara in Llanera, Asturias used to be one such abandoned building, until an angel swooped through its doors. Or, maybe it’d be more accurate to say skated through its doors.
Thanks to an entrepreneurial collective called the Church Brigade, and a little help from Red Bull and local donors, the church has been reborn as a public skate park called Kaos Temple. If the renovations aren’t enough to peak your interest, the park also features extensive paintings by artist Okuda San Miguel across its walls and vaulted ceilings. The end result is a psychedelic cornucopia of sports, public renovation, and extreme sports. Let’s take a look.
