This Is America's Most Famous Abandoned Hobbit House, And It's Now Available For Sale.

Wisconsonites have a long-standing fascination with the Mushroom House, a weird one-bedroom home in Door County built in 1978. The strange hobbit hole home was built by artist and activist Albert Quinlan and was intended to give the feeling of living in a comfortable cave. The home was kept warm with two fireplaces for year-round coziness.

The architecture was meant to blend into its surroundings and was an early model of eco-friendly building. For heat during chilly Door County days, the front facing wall, made entirely of glass, catches the sunlight just right and provides a great place for basking.

When Quinlan passed away, this incredible little house was boarded up and largely forgotten in the woods, although it remained the stuff of legends for Midwestern families vacationing through Door County.
