This Mysterious Temple In Thailand Is Both Disturbing And Beautiful

Dec 23, 2014

When an earthquake hit Mae Lao in Thailand in May of 2014, the vibrations shook 17 miles up to the Chiang Rai Province. The quake left Chiang Rai heavily damaged with split roads, destroyed commercial buildings and evacuated homes. Thankfully, there were relatively few injuries and only one death, but the area is still rebuilding from the earthquake.

One of the buildings affected by the quake was one of Thailand's most distinct: Wat Rong Khun.

It's known as the White Temple and is obviously a popular spot for sightseeing.

The Buddhist temple was built by Buddhist artist Chalermchai Kositpipat in 1997.

Kositpipat was initially despondent and planned to demolish the damaged temple.

But seeing that the actual structure was still sound, he vowed to restore the temple to its original glory.
