Being a foster parent is one of the toughest jobs you can have, but it also one of the most rewarding. Unfortunately, there is a serious lack of good homes for foster kids to live with. Over 100,000 kids are currently in need of a family to take them in. One of the biggest problems facing the foster care program is that some parents only participate for the monthly stipend. This leads to neglectful and sometimes abusive households that worsen an already horrific living situation for the kids.
The ABC reality show What Would You Do? attempted to address this problem in a recent episode. They did this by staging a fake scene at a restaurant that featured a foster mom being verbally abusive to her kid. It was all scripted and designed as a social experiment to see who in the restaurant would stand up and say something, and who would just sit by and watch it happen.
Amazingly, multiple people in the restaurant stepped forward and put a stop to the abuse. One woman even offered to pay for the child's meal and secretly asked for his name and phone number so she could report the incident without the foster mom knowing. While it's heartwarming to see strangers stand up to abuse, the disturbing fact is this kind of thing happens to foster kids all over the country and many of them don't have kind people to help them out. So if you ever see abuse happening, make sure to follow the example of the people in this video, and be the one to stop it.
