A simple search on children learning languages generates a multitude of scholarly articles from some of the world's leading experts in linguistics. But, as an average, everyday person, it is not likely that one would want to sit down and read the research behind this phenomenon. Much of this uncertainty and debate comes from the fact that it's only been in the last few decades that human brains could be studied while they are in the process of learning, thanks to technologies like the functional MRI. That means that this research is relatively new and there is still much to be learned.
