16-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Knocks Simon Cowell Out Of His Chair

America’s Got Talent judge Simon Cowell has a reputation for being tough to impress. He first earned notoriety back in 2001 when he sat in the judge’s chair on Britain’s Pop Idol. Since those early days, he has decided the fate of hundreds of hopeful stars-to-be. More often than not, he seems to take joy in dashing their dreams.

Occasionally, however, a contestant manages to melt his icy heart. It’s a Herculean task, one that usually takes a person with incredible talent to accomplish. Recently, a young woman named Calysta Bevier was able to capture not just Simon’s attention, but his heart as well. He and fellow judges Howie Mandel, Mel B, and Heidi Klum were all swept away by her incredible voice and stage presence. They were even more amazed when they learned that the young lady was only 16 years old!

After being compared to Audrey Hepburn by Mandel, Calysta commented that her short hair “wasn’t really [her] choice." She revealed that she was a recent cancer survivor, beating stage III ovarian cancer barely a year before. Her mission, she said, was to show the world that you can struggle with adversity and still follow your dreams.

Watch the video below to see Calysta blow away the judges with her rendition of Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song.” After her performance, Cowell comments that he could tell there was something special about her as soon as she walked onto the stage. Once you see Calysta in action, we think you’ll agree.
